The inaugural meeting of Melius Lodge of Emulation took place on the evening of Monday 22nd September, marking an important milestone for Brethren across the Province who wish to develop and excel in the practice of pure Emulation ritual.

Now a recognised Lodge of Emulation Instruction by the world-renowned Emulation Lodge of Improvement in London (ELoI), the new Lodge offers an opportunity for committed Brethren to rehearse, refine, and perfect ritual exactly as set out in the Blue Book. Unlike a regular Lodge of Instruction, Melius does not seek to replace the ritual workings of any individual Lodge but instead provides a challenging environment for those wishing to deepen their understanding and elevate their standard of delivery.
In his response to his toast, RW Bro Mark Constant, Provincial Grand Master, warmly welcomed the formation of Melius:
“I am very pleased that Melius Lodge of Emulation has been formed. It is important to note that Melius is not a regular Lodge of Instruction and is not to replace or change the workings undertaken by Lodges around the Province, but rather for those that want to hone their ritual and enjoy the challenge of perfecting the art of pure Emulation.”

The evening featured a demonstration of a First Degree Ceremony in pure Emulation style, as demonstrated at ELoI, with WBro Alan Wynn, a recognised preceptor and a regular attendee of the London ELoI, acting as Worshipful Master. All other offices were held by Light Blue Brethren from Kettering, Thrapston, and Corby, showcasing the Lodge’s commitment to involving newer Masons in the ritual.

Guidance and instruction were provided by Melius Preceptors, W Bros Mark Titterton, Billy Glover, and Eddie Storey. Joining them, adding further weight to the evening, visiting committee members from the ELoI in London, WBro Huw Shooter and WBro Jake Mossom, led a highly engaging question-and-answer session, much to the appreciation of all present.

Additional Melius committee members are WBro Tony Landon as Treasurer, and WBros Allen Betts and John McGrath as Secretary and Assistant Secretary.
The event was extremely well supported, with more than 60 Brethren attending the festive board, including the APGM WBro Francis Margôt and both of the Provincial Grand Wardens, creating a lively and fraternal atmosphere.

Melius Lodge of Emulation is held under the sanction of Rockingham Forest Lodge 9491, and will initially meet in Kettering on the third Wednesday of each month, with additional venues and dates TBC. Annual membership set at just £10. Those wishing to join or learn more are encouraged to contact the Secretary, W Bro Allen Betts on 07872 101790 or via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. The establishment of Melius is a significant addition to the Province, offering Brethren the opportunity not only to participate in ritual of the highest standard but also to experience the challenge, satisfaction, and brotherhood that comes from striving for ritual excellence.
