Provincial Officers Mark Six Vintage Years

Although now out of office, the Past Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro Barrie Hall is still kept busy. A recent duty was an official visit to his own Lodge, Risdene Lodge No 6532 at Rushden, for its Installation ceremony on 19 October.

He was rather surprised to meet a large delegation of Acting Provincial Officers. All seemed normal - until he was due to speak at the Festive Board. W Bro John Hitchin ProvSGW then took the floor and made a presentation on behalf of the Provincial officers who "had been appointed by him, only to be abandoned almost immediately!"

The gift was six bottles of fine vintage wine, one dating from each of the six years that R W Bro Barrie had been in office as Provincial Grand Master.

RW Bro Barrie Hall commented, "A splendid Installation was followed by a very surprising Festive Board, the memory of which will be both abiding and treasured for a very long time!! The wonderful wines and glasses are simply breathtaking and so very much appreciated."

During the ceremony earlier, WBro Eric Place PPJGW (Durham) was installed as WM.

Much of his working life was spent in Greece. He was formerly the official representative of the United Grand Lodge of England for the Grand Lodge of Greece.

In retirement he settled in Rushden and has now taken over the reins at Risdene at short notice due to the illness of the original Master Elect, Bro Frank Wittish.

The new WM expressed the feelings of all present when he said he hoped Bro Frank would soon be fit enough to resume his Masonic progress.

Unfortunately Nick Brown suffered an injury on the first day of the walk and was forced to pull out on the third day.

WBro Glover said "Of the three walks I have done it was by far the hardest, with two 400ft climbs almost straight up - Conic hill on the first day and on the last day climbing out of Kinlochleven. On reflection both of these were harder than the famed Devil's Staircase."

In 2010 WBro Glover completed a walk raising £200 for Help for Heroes.

WBro Albert Shepherd, who was 86 years old, passed to the Grand Lodge above on Monday 19 September. He had not been well for some time but after making a recovery was re-admitted to hospital this where he passed away.

He was an Honorary Member of the Lodge of Perseverance No 455 and a member of the Northamptonshire & Huntingdonshire Lodge of Installed Masters No 3422, Trinity Lodge No 9165, Rockingham Forest Lodge No 9491 and Three Counties Lodge No 9278. He was also a member of the Holy Royal Arch.

Albert Shepherd

of the March 2006 meeting of the Lodge of Perseverance No 455 in Kettering

W Bro Albert Shepherd, had a distinguished war record, as a Rear Gunner on Lancaster Bombers, in the Second World War. During 1944 and 1945 Albert flew a total of 38 missions over enemy territory which was a truly remarkable feat given that the Rear Gunners precarious position, perched at the back of the aeroplane, meant they generally had a very short life expectancy during active service.

Bro Albert was well known throughout the Province and served for many years as Senior Group Officer for Kettering. He will be sadly missed.

Great North Run Success for WBro Jack Summerfield

The Great North Run is the largest half Marathon in the world with 54,000 participants each year. Due to the high number of applicants entrants are selected at random.

WBro Jack Summerfield of Corbie Lodge 9155 entered the draw this year and, to his surprise, he was successful. He therefore downloaded a BUPA training programme and followed it as best he could. He describes his frame a portly and he had never run further than 400m. Training intensively during the summer, he decided to raise money for Teddies For Loving Care.

Jack Summerfield

WBros Jack Summerfield, WM of Corbie Lodge No 9155

He was installed into the Chair of Corbie Lodge ten days before the run which took place on 16 September 2011.

For the first time in his 13 years as a Mason, he did not need to loosen his apron after the Summer Break. In fact he lost 3 stones in weight.

Originally only hoping to simply finish the race he eventually set a target of three hours. Starting at the very back of the pack and it took him a full 35 minutes to reach the start line! All 13.1 miles were lined with people cheering and bands playing.

He says, "It was like a dream and I managed to complete it in 2hrs 38mins 31 seconds, having overtook more than 23,000 people. I was sore for a week afterwards but the hurt was eased by the fact that I had raised £500 for TLC. Thanks to all brethren, friends and family that sponsored me."

Graft of the Craft at Daventry Centre

During the 2011 summer break, two major changes have taken place at Daventry's Masonic Centre.

Whoops

Bro Bob Lattaway wonders if the plan was to get a new carpet anyway

The dining room, bar and entrance lobbies have been renovated and decorated and, working to WBro Bill Mead's design and with WBro Rick Bott's assistance, the kitchen area has been extended. This extension has meant the addition of a new partition wall and the creation of storage areas for tables and chairs.

Norman Pope

At the other end of the room, under WBro Dick Godwin's guidance and utilising WBro Ken Bryant's skills, the bar counter, shelving, flooring and glass washing areas have all been totally renewed.

Helping to ensure these projects were completed before the start of the 2011/12 Masonic season, were many Brethren, who freely gave of their time and skills

Bro Roy Major, in plumbing in sinks and modifying the central heating system

Bro Max Reynolds, fitting doors, skirtings and architraves

WBro Graham Ballinger, modifying lighting and electrics

and Bro Bob Lattaway and WBro Tony Pointing, along with many others, painting ceilings, walls, doors and a myriad of other tasks.

We are indebted to them all.

APGM, WBro Norman Pope aims high

Thanks to the hard work of 37 individuals, including wives and children (and not forgetting the assitance of two Assistants - APGMs) Daventry now has a dining room which is a much brighter and fresher place in which to enjoy Festive Boards, for many years to come.

The room has been adorned by a number of Masonic prints, the work of distinctive artist, Peter Heard, which were generously donated by WBro Malcolm Payne.

To all those who lent a hand, a Golden Nail has been awarded. This distinguishes them as Brethren with whom, local Lodge WM's are pleased to take wine, to highlight their contribution. This warrants the thanks of all Brethren who enjoy meeting at Daventry.

  Wayne Williams

APGM, WBro Wayne Williams ensures it will be all white on the night

The second major change, was forced on the Centre's Committee, by the retirement of Derek Mitchell (Newton Caterers). After 50 years in the catering business and 38 years serving the brethren of Daventry (and, in the past, Towcester) Derek and his wife Leslie, decided to take a well earned retirement. They plan to tour, both the UK and the rest of the World.

Brethren needn't worry however, as the Club have secured the services of new caterers who have provided a fresh new menu, capable of tempting even the most "devouring beast of the field."

Provincial Cricketers Score Historic Victory

Less than a month after being installed our new PGM, RW Bro Max Bayes oversaw an impressive addition of sporting silverware to the Provincial sporting trophy cabinet.

On Sunday 21 August the Provincial cricket team travelled to Rickmansworth to take on the Metropolitan Grand Lodge for the annual cricket match for the Andrew Henderson Memorial Trophy. Supporters also included the Deputy PGM, both Assistant PGMs, and the Provincial Grand Secretary and their ladies.

PGM, RW Bro Max Bayes, presents the trophyto winning Captain, Mike Caseman-Jones

Having been asked to bat first the Province ably led by Mike Caseman-Jones amassed 201 off 30 overs. Scoring 40 runs, Jeremy Thomas was man of the match for the second year running. He was well supported by Mark Rawson (36) and Brian Gargett (38).

The Metropolitan Grand Lodge team lost early wickets and with all the catches being held they were dismissed for 74. A notable win for the Province by 127 runs.

In the four annual matches between these two teams, this is the first time that the Province has triumphed. This, together with the excellent weather and company, made it an excellent day for the Province. It is our turn to host the fixture next year.

Gentlemen's Sporting Lunch Maintains Its Winning Ways

Building on the success of the 2010 Gentlemen's Sporting Lunch and Auction, a similar event was held at Northampton on 8 April.

The event certainly achieved its two main aims of providing enjoyment and raising money for charitable purposes.

A packed audience enjoyed an excellent meal followed by an auction of sporting memorabilia conducted by the award winning comedian, Russ Williams.

Steak Pie Night at Coritani Lodge

Daventry's Coritani Lodge No 8079 celebrated its annual Pickwickian evening on 24 February. The annual event, also known as Steak Pie Night, was the brain child of a founder member, the late WBro Eric Pell PPAGM.

The brethren and guests sang the Pie Song as the Senior Steward, Bro Alan Ford, brought the pie to the Worshipful Master, WBro Neil Carr to be cut. The Festive Board continued with pauses for singing led by Past Master of the Lodge, WBro Johnny Harris.

The 73 brethren present had earlier enjoyed a presentation of the first three parts of the first degree lecture given by a team of 12 brethren ranging from Fellow Crafts to Past Provincial officers. Coritani Lodge presents a lecture each year usually combining it with Pie Night. The lectures are an ideal way to give newer brethren a chance to do some floor work and also make a change from the regular ceremonies of the three degrees.

That is absolutely fantastic and I can't thank you enough. Four Brothers in Unique Ceremony

In an unusual - if not unique - event on the evening of Thursday 3 March 2011 three blood brothers attended the initiation of a fourth blood brother.

Bros Stuart Watson of Vale of Nene Lodge No 7006, Tony Watson of St Aubyn Lodge No 954, and Mark Watson of Doctor Oliver Lodge No 3964 visited Charing Cross Lodge No 4913 in Birkenhead in the Province of Cheshire in support of their brother Peter, the latest member of their family to be initiated Initiation into Freemasonry.

The visit was a complete surprise for the initiate, Peter Watson. He was totally unaware that three of his brothers, accompanied by a friend, Bro Peter Reeves of the Vale of Nene Lodge, had made the journey from their homes in Peterborough and Plymouth respectively to attend the ceremony.

Thanks go to WBro Brian Hurton, the initiate's Lodge Secretary, for helping spring this surprise. Once Peter was secreted below stairs in preparation for his initiation Bro Brian collected the Brothers Watson from their hotel and hosted them prior to the commencement of labour.

Brethren of the Lodge were fully aware and appreciated their new made Brother's reaction on seeing this excellent family support. Having seen the light in a high class ceremony, Bro Peter Watson's first perambulation was completed with due solemnity and no recognition of the presence of his brothers. However, during his second perambulation he finally noticed them, spontaneously throwing back his head in surprise and delight, much to the amusement of Lodge members and guests who broke out into a chorus of laughter. The excellent ceremony was completed by the Worshipful Master, WBro David Morris.

Culminating in an excellent Festive Board, the evening was a splendid success and triumph for the Brothers Watson.

Provincial Launch of Freemasonry Cares

As we entered the New Year we would all have wished our loved ones, relations and friends a Peaceful, Prosperous and Healthy New Year. However, the wisest of us knows not what is 'round the corner'. When the unexpected happens some of us will have the ability to cope. Others, less fortunate, will not. Some are aware of our Masonic charities and how they can help in times of need. Equally a large number of our Brethren and their dependents do not.

You might ask why? Is it because the don't they know how to access it or think they qualify? Are they reticent or too proud to approach a Lodge member directly? That is why our Province is launching this service that is both unique and special and is called

Freemasonry Cares

We all hope we will never face financial hardship or major health problems; need help supporting our children or require extra care in our old age. In reality thousands of people every year need a little extra assistance. We, as Freemasons, are fortunate to have that support to hand. The newly launched Freemasonry Cares service is there to make sure Freemasons and their dependents, who need that support, get it.

Freemasonry Cares is a joint initiative involving the four central Masonic Charities and is a gateway to the help that they can provide. It aims to increase awareness of that help and to make it easier to access via the establishment of a national Freephone number; a new website and possible email contact.

Rather than expect a potential applicant to remember and understand there are four Masonic Charities offering many different types of help, the message now focuses on themes.

Passport to Help

These themes are contained within the Passport to Help – a pack designed to look so special it can not be easily discarded.

Passport to Help encourages individuals to ask

  • Do I have a Masonic connection?

  • Do I have a need with which Freemasonry might help?

  • Is it a financial, healthcare or family need?

If the answer to each of the questions is Yes, the individual should immediately contact the Lodge Almoner or Freemasonry Cares.

This initiative provides a unique opportunity to make sure those who perhaps in the past have not been well-versed in our Masonic charities (especially wives, partners and widows of masons) are brought up to date on the Masonic help available to them.

The Provincial Grand Almoner, WBro John Partridge PAGDC commented, "I have always recognised the difficulty in reaching those who are outside our direct lines of communication. In particular those Brethren who resign from our Lodges, for whatever reason, and subsequently lose contact with us - those Brethren will probably have wives and partners.

If they could take something with them that gives a simple point of contact for future reference then at least some link has been retained. This Province wants to establish that link by using the Freemasonry Cares initiative. This may not necessarily immediately re-establish links but some detective work by individual Lodges may help.

However, if we are successful with the Freemasonry Cares initiative, coupled with diligence in keeping membership details up to date, then such problems as 'whereabouts unknown' will be a thing of the past.

Freemasonry Cares has the full backing of our Provincial Grand Master and his Executive. Its success relies on the information explaining Freemasonry Cares being spread. That is down to each and every one of us."

Checklist

Freemasonry Cares does not replace the Lodge Almoner.

On the contrary, it will supplement his work. If the message reaches areas it has not reached before then it is highly possible his workload might increase. In view of this, this Province has made the Lodge Almoner the key link in the distribution of the Passport to Help packs.

He will personally present them to all the Brethren and widows associated with his Lodge.

Please support him in his onerous and important task. Please listen to him.

When you receive your Passport to Help, please look at it. Share it with your partner and then keep it safe. You never know when you might need it.
