Scout Lodge No 9814 Banner Dedication

Those privileged to attend the Scout Lodge banner dedication at Rushden on 8 December 2009 took part in a true feast of Masonry.

Group
Scout Lodge Members with WBro Max Bayes (centre)

The meeting, attended by the Deputy Provincial Grand Master, VWBro Max Bayes, included a superb 3rd degree ceremony with the WM, WBro Norman Pope, presiding.

After the banner had been dedicated the Provincial Grand Chaplain, WBro Frank Pickard ProvAGChap, delivered a superb Oration including references to his first love affair (with a 2nd class Girl Guide), the principles of Masonry, the lessons of the 3rd degree and the significance of a banner dedication.

Although never a scout himself, he described his admiration for the movement, drawing comparisons between the aims of the two organisations.

Both teach their members to be faithful to their God, their country and their laws. He explained how the teaching of the 3rd degree could be summed up in the scout motto “Be prepared”.

Calendar Tradition Lives on

Calendar

For many years the late WBro Bernard Winkworth produced calendars that he drew and illustrated himself. He sold these in the aid of Masonic charities.

Around the turn of the year he was a familiar sight at Northampton Masonic Hall where he gave Brethren plenty of opportunties to buy his calendars.

With his passing this local tradition was also in danger of coming to an end.

In his memory and in order that the tradition should be perpetuated, WBro Stuart Bamborough of the Lodge of St George No 5978 and Bros Graham Hawker and Norman Sidey of the Lodge of Harmony No 9048 have taken on the the task of producing and selling the calendars.

They ask for your support and will be selling the 2010 calendars at £3 each in aid of the Provincial Grand Charity.

During the summer of 2009, Mrs Mollie Clarke OBE of the Red Cross in Northampton approached the Provincial Grand Charity asking for help to purchase urgently needed self propelled wheelchairs for children. (New Health & Safety legislation meant children could not use the adult size chairs normally available from the Red Cross.)

60 yrs in Freemasonry for WBro George Osborne

WBro George Osborne PSGD is undoubtedly one of the best-known and best-loved members of the Province.

At the age of 84, his ritual, his memory and the twinkle in his eye are the envy of many a younger man.

During World War II he gave distinguished service as a navigator in the RAF.

George Osborne

WBro George Osborne

On 17 November 1949 , at the age of 24, he was initiated into the Bishop of Barking Lodge No 3050 in Ilford, Essex. He was Installed as its WM in 1962 and again in 1994 for its centenary year. This Lodge is now part of the Metropolitan Grand Lodge. In 1958 he was a founder of the New Elizabethan Lodge No 7561 at Upminster (Essex) and its WM in 1963.

By then Bro George had qualified as a dentist and moved to Rushden where he has lived ever since. He joined Risdene Lodge No 6532 in 1967, was its WM in 1971, and later DC for nine years. He helped to found Heigham Lodge No 8486 in 1973, was DC for eight years and WM in 1993. Added to these are memberships of the Lodge of Installed Masters No 3422 and Three Counties Lodge No 9278. He was appointed ProvJGW in 1978 and then received the remarkably high first appointment to active Grand Rank as Senior Grand Deacon in 1981.

Bro George is also a member of the Royal Arch, Knights Templar (where he was for a time Provincial Sub-Prior) and numerous other Orders. In most of these he has achieved Grand Rank and Provincial Grand Rank in the others.

Presentation by PGM
The PGM Presents 60 yrs Certificate to WBro George Osborne

It seemed to be a routine meeting of Risdene Lodge on 18 November 2009. George delivered a typically superb explanation of the Traditional History in the 3rd degree. After this RWBro Barrie Hall, Provincial Grand Master (a member of the Lodge) presented George with a Sixty Year Certificate.

The PGM delighted all present with a history of George’s career, dotted with anecdotes such as his pickpocketing of the candidate during an Initiation. George was then given a celebratory bottle of champagne and a standing ovation, following which, probably for the first time in his life, he was lost for words!

At the Festive Board, the PGM spoke for everyone in wishing Bro George many more happy years in Freemasonry.

Provincial Demonstration Group Update - October 2009

The successful progress of the Provincial Demonstration Group was maintained with a presentation of Lodge Night 1759 at Hatton Lodge No 3041 in Wellingborough on Thursday 15 October 2009.

Demo Group

Development of other material continues.  The Holy Royal Arch play, ‘How and Why the Royal Arch?’ has been written, had its first reading and now goes into casting and rehearsals. It is a bold demonstration that successfully deals with a complex subject. The premiere will be at the First Principals’ Chapter No 3422 in Northampton on Friday 23 April 2010.

From May 2010 ‘How and Why the Royal Arch?’ will be available for booking by Lodges or Chapters.

The Demonstration Group has adopted a play by Barry Hales and Mike Farrow of Risdene Lodge entitled ‘The Working Tools - a New Perspective’. This is a two-man demonstration featuring a real stonemason and his colleague. They enlighten us on how the tools of an operative mason were used in medieval times and link this to their symbolic meaning. They take us on a journey to explore how and why we moralise on the working tools of the three craft degrees. This will be available for booking from November 2009.

In October 2009 the Group had 11 bookings (up to June 2010) - including four out of this Province. Two of these bookings can be directly attributed to an article about the Group published in the June 2009 edition of The Square, a national Masonic magazine.

The Group aims to draw its membership from across the Province. Roles include research, writing, acting, logistics, props and costumes. There are Group meeting on Saturday 7 and Saturday 28 November 2009 in Northampton.

For details, and to register your interest, email the Demonstration Group Chairman, WBro Trevor Sherman.

To book the Group for the 2010/11 Masonic season Lodges and Chapters should email the Group’s Booking Officer, WBro Gordon Walker.

WBro Mike Richards Overwhelmed by Masonic Support

W Bro Mike Richards has been very active throughout his 40 years as a Mason, and is well known in the Craft and many other Orders, throughout the Province and beyond, as an energetic and ever cheery individual.

  Mike Richards

However, in the past few months, he has suffered such a harrowing time that it is only through the support of family and friends, and his indomitable spirit that has been able to carry on.

On 25 May his beloved wife, Sally, was admitted to Northampton General Hospital with a serious illness.

On 24 July Bro Mike was on his way to visit her when he had a painful experience that proved to be a serious heart attack.  He had just made it to the ward when the heart attack was diagnosed.  After being immediately admitted, initially to the A & E Department, he was transferred to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Very sadly Sally did not recover from her illness and died on 3 August.

Bro Mike said, "As you might imagine, this has been a very difficult time for me and I'd like to use the Provincial Website as a means of communicating to as many people as possible my sincere appreciation for their support.

The staff who treated me at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford did a magnificent job for which I will be eternally grateful.

I have also been absolutely overwhelmed with messages of goodwill through personal calls, telephone calls, cards, letters and emails. These have come from all over the Province, the country and even from abroad. It has been just wonderful."

Freemasons £8,500 for Northampton Heart Unit ECG Equipment

An initiative led by WBro John Bull, ProvJGW of Old Northamptonian Lodge No 5694 and coordinated by WBro Tony Potter of Kingsley Lodge No 2431, has played a substantial part in funding the purchase of much needed ECG equipment for the new Heart Unit at Northampton General Hospital.

A number of Northampton Lodges made donations in aid of the Heart Unit Appeal.  These donations were matched by the Provincial Grand Charity resulting in a total of £8,500 being raised.

Trafalgar Square Perch for Living Statue, WBro Trevor Sherman

A Northampton Mason has been a living statute in Trafalgar Square.

Trevor arrives on the Plinth

WBro Trevor Sherman (of Pomfret Lodge No 360 and Eleanor Cross Chapter No 1764) perched alone on top of the 25 foot high Fourth Plinth in the north-west of Trafalgar Square, in central London.

It had been empty for many years but was used for specially commissioned highly individual artworks.

Each hour, 24 hours a day, for 100 days between July and October 2009 a different person appeared on the Plinth.

  Trevor begins to sing

Bro Trevor was that specially commissioned artwork between 1 am and 2 am on Monday 17 August. He therefore had 60 (not 15) minutes of fame in occupying the Plinth.

Fortunately he did not need a ladder or crampons to scale the Plinth as the organisers thoughtfully provided a cherry picker hoist.

The hoist

Despite the late (or was it early?) hour, supporters filled a coach to accompany Bro Trevor to Trafalgar Square and provided an impromptu and enthusiastic choir.

Supporters

Trevor's granddaughter give their view

He sang popular and patriotic songs and gave recitations as diverse as Norma Warden’s ‘Ode to Watford Gap’ and Rudyard Kipling’s ‘The Mother Lodge.'

Trevor gets into his stride

As he introduced and sang the Morecambe and Wise hit, ‘Bring Me Sunshine,’ Bro Trevor said, “I’m sorry.  I can't dance up here.  Its too dangerous.”

Trevor gets into his stride

An unidentified wag in the crowd was heard to shout, “Go on Trevor.  We want to see you fall off!

Although much fun was had by all, there was a serious reason behind Bro Trevor’s marvellous effort - to raise money for Help the Heroes.

As well as much support from individuals, he has obtained sponsorship from Northampton's three major sports teams, the Saints, the Cobblers and the Steelbacks.

Trevor sings some more

During his performance, Bro Trevor reached his target of £2,000.  However he is continuing his Help the Heroes fund raising effort until 24 December 2009, so you can still donate by going to his page on the Help the Heroes website.

We congratulate Bro Trevor for his marvellous effort.

In Memorium - WBro WBro Bernard Winkworth PPrSGW, CoM; 1917- 2009

Bernard Winkworth

On Friday 31 July 2009 WBro Bernard Winkworth, holder of the Provincial Grand Master's Certificate of Merit, passed away to the Grand Lodge Above.

A devoted family man and dedicated Freemason, he died at the age of 92 years and 105 days (being a stickler for detail he would have approved of the mention of 105 days).

He was born in St James, Northampton, during the Great War and, as a Royal Engineer, fought in the Second World War.  He leaves a devoted wife, Peggy, whom he married in 1971.

WBro Bernard Winkworth

After his family, Bro Bernard’s great loves in life were gardening, golf, snooker and calligraphy.  The garden of his house in Harpole was always immaculately laid out with beautifully tended flowers and vegetables - weedless - with not a blade of grass out of place.

In 1973 he joined the Lodge of St George, became Master in 1986 and served it as Secretary from 1988 to 2000.  He was a brilliant ritualist and always willing to share his in-depth knowledge of Freemasonry in general - as a result many, many Freemason’s young and old have benefited from his wise counsel.

His calligraphy skills were always in demand.  Evidence of them can be seen in this Parish Church in Harpole in the form of the Book of Remembrance and the list of succeeding Clergy.  But it was in Freemasonry where his calligraphy skills were most in demand for such items as table plans for Provincial Grand Lodges and Ladies’ Festivals galore - each name lovingly crafted in ‘Old English’ with his trusty italic nib.

He will also be famously remembered for his hand drawn and illustrated calendars which he sold for charity.  (The 2009 version cost only £3!)

In 1997 his Masonic career was ‘crowned’ by the award of the highest honour the Province has in its power to bestow - the Right Worshipful Provincial Grand Master’s Certificate of Merit.

Bro Bernard was a member of many other Orders in Freemasonry invariably achieving high Office in each.

As well as being a great loss to his family, his passing is an immeasurable loss to Freemasonry.

Annual Cricket Match Versus Metropolitan Grand Lodge

Brethren and Supporters converged on the Royal Masonic School for Girls in Rickmansworth on Sunday 19 July 2009 for the second Annual Cricket Bonanza with Metropolitan Grand Lodge of London.

Cricket scene

Having successfully negotiated the challenge of locating the pitch and pavilion, our Captain, Jamie Plowman, won the toss and elected to field. The team was strengthened at the last minute with the inclusion of our Assistant PGM, Viv Thomas and Peter Ayton (who also doubled as umpires).

On a slow pitch, where runs were hard to come by, our opponents made steady progress against some mixed bowling. The 100 run mark was passed after 26 overs with the loss of 2 wickets. Further bowling success followed but the host’s score finally totalled 143 for 7 wickets in their allotted 35 overs.  Tea (or rather a three course meal with wine) was then taken.

Teams
The Provincial Grand Master (right) with the two teams

After a torrential rain storm the sun re-appeared to encourage the Northants & Hunts batsmen to rise to the occasion. The gamesmanship employed by the Met Grand Lodge of London to generously feed and water the teams between innings proved to be successful.  Wickets fell.  The required run rate rose.  Sterling performances by Jeremy Thomas (17), Peter Ayton (13) and Viv Thomas (10) gave our own “Barmy Army” much to sing about.  However, with the score on 83 the final wicket fell.  We had to be content with second place for the second year running.

Supporters
The teams had enthusiastic support

Worse was to come - the hosts won all the raffle prizes.  However, another memorable day of fun was sufficient compensation for the Provincial Grand Master and his team and supporters who are looking forward to next year’s rematch.

Unique visitor numbers steadily grew throughout the year, starting at a rate of just over 700 per month in January, 2008, and peaking at over 1,100 in November.  After the Home Page, the three most visited pages were those listing details of Lodges in the Province with their meeting dates, Provincial News and the Introduction to the Province.

The site has been used as a research tool by non-Masons and has been directly responsible for the recruitment of 32 new members to Lodges in the Province (and 15 applications are pending).

The increasing use of the site is at the heart of the greater use of technology in Freemasonry in this Province in which

      • all but five of the 90 Lodges in the Province now use the Internet
      • this Provincial web site features a page for Secretaries' exclusive use from which can be downloaded all the Provincial and Grand Lodge forms, templates and other information needed by Secretaries
      • issues of Password (from 2005 onwards) can be downloaded
      • lodges are increasingly using email to circulate summonses and copies of meeting minutes
      • Grand Lodge and the Provincial Office now accept the submission of various forms by email
      • the Provincial Office and Provincial Executive (through the Provincial Office) now accept Lodge summonses by email
      • in November 2008 an online Provincial information, learning and discussion forum was launched
